Captain's Report
This year the Ladies County Team were playing in the dizzy heights of Div 2, which also meant that we were also playing in the dizzy heights of Manchester. The grass courts were immaculate, but the heat was torturing. Starting at 10am on the Monday, Avon were up against the old fire of Nottinghamshire. Losing 2 Championship tie breaks, it was tough to say that we lost 5- 4 overall.
Leicestershire were our 2nd day opposition. Gaining an extra player, Leicestershire had 3 equally strong pairs all of whom were a force to be reckoned with. Losing 7- 2 was hard to take, especially knowing that our opposition had lost in the first day with a weakened team.
Wednesday saw us having to come up against Warwickshire. Warwickshire has beaten Leicestershire on the first day but lost heavily to Middlesex the day after. We had new cavalry arrive in the shape of Laura Sainsbury. Suddenly our 3 pairs were also looking equal and my hopes were raised!
Going into the final round Avon were standing strong at 4-2 up! Amy Leather and Eleanor Nobbs were 6- 0, along with Laura and Maria Budin also being a set up. I sat back to enjoy the victory HOWEVER, Amy and Eleanor, Laura and Maria went onto losing the second set with all being played for in yet further Championship tiebreaks! Amy and Eleanor, Gabi Coglitore and Hannah Davis all lost their final match. The match is now tied 4- 4! Sat on the edge of my seat with the odd mumble and over excited cheering. Laura and a Maria won their tie break meaning that Avon won 5- 4.
Thursday saw us up against the formidable Middlesex team, where at the beginning of the week, were destroying every opposition in front of them. With a weakened team, our girls were stepping up the anti and with day starting on the artificial clay, Hannah Davis and Gabi Coglitore pulled off an amazing win against the No 1 Middlesex. Well done to Edie Hammond who came on to replace Hannah for the last match and gave it her all with Gabi narrowly losing on a Champ tie break, but Avon took the win 6-3. This made the final day against Gloucestershire all to play for, because it meant that if we won, we were in with a chance of going up to Div 1, staying in Div 2, but if lost, a small chance of going down.
Gloucester lost every day, so it could have been really exciting times! There was one massive spanner in the works on the final day and that was the weather! It was absolutely belting it down! We all arrived at the club at 8am, and sadly the day was called by midday without a tennis ball being struck. The results were carried over from where they ended on Day 4, which meant that Avon ladies remained in Div 2 of the Summer County Cup for a further year.
As always, it was an absolute pleasure and honour to Captain such a beautiful, gorgeous bunch of Ladies who love their County Tennis days! #Avontilwedie The tennis was outstanding and I really couldn’t ask anything more of Laura, Maria, Eleanor, Amy, Gabi, Hannah, Edie, Elly Sherman and Claudia Hallsworth.
Until next year.
