Congratulations 9U's at the County Cup Finals.

9U Captains Report

So, Avon 9U Boys and Girls teams both qualified for the Southern area National finals in Bath, where the finals were geographically divided into northern and southern areas; eg 2 National area finals over the whole country.

The Boys team were: Mathis, Lucas, Max, James, Christian.

Each match consisted of 4 singles and 2 doubles matches to 4 games( a short set), with a tie break at 3 games all; compared to the normal format of just one tie break to 10. The boys competed in many tiebreak sets and the results were :

4-2 win v Hertfordshire

3-3 draw v. Warwickshire but lost on tie break shoot out, 10-6

5-1 loss v Berkshire

6-0 loss v Kent

With 24 individual short sets played, 6 resulted in tiebreak sets, so a real gutsy effort from the boys that both Lauren and Martyn were extremely proud of.

The Girls team were: Isobel, Ayesha, Isabelle, Lena and Valentina

The girls were equally unlucky to lose all of there matches coming 5th. But again with 5 sets out of the 24 being decided by tie breaks sets, the outcomes of matches could have been different and the girls started like the boys with a:

3-3 draw with Warwickshire and a narrow loss in the tie break shootout, followed by a :

4-2 loss to Hertfordshire

5-1 loss to Berkshire

6-0 loss to Middlesex

Generally competing with London county’s is a tall order, but the girls like the boys, did us all so proud and with a great team spirit, some fantastic doubles to end the extremely long day, 9am-7pm, we could honestly say that both teams joint Performance and sportsmanship would be difficult to match by any team; as at least a couple of our players over ruled their own line calls, after they realised a mistake has been made.

A great effort from the kids and well done to coaches, parents, Avon Tennis to offer training and especially to all of the individual coaches who work tirelessly with the support of various clubs throughout the county; to bring these kids up to this National level.

It was a total pleasure.

Coaches Lauren English and Martyn Bray on behalf of Avon Tennis.
